Our New Building

In summer 2012 we moved into our beautiful new Apothecary building, which was crafted by Artisan Builders to meet our growing needs as a production facility. This building was designed to meet our standards as a medicine making facility, the FDA standards for supplement production and the standards required for our commercial kitchen licensing. Altogether the project took about 5 years to come from dream to reality, and we're very happy with the free flowing, nurturing space that holds our medicine production from start to finish and allows for more efficiency in our work flow.

                           What we do

Fresh, hand-harvested plants come into the Apothecary from Avena's incredible Demeter-certified biodynamic gardens and drying rooms to be processed into herbal remedies. Some herbs are infused in organic olive oil at 100'F for two weeks: a slow infusion process which creates high quality medicinal oils for our oil blends, and which are also made into our beautiful cremes and salves in regular small batches to ensure freshness. Some of the herbs are dried in our drying rooms and then hand-mixed into our fresh and fragrant tea blends. Most of the herbs that leave the garden are processed immediately after harvest into liquid extracts. Our alcohol extracts, glycerites and elixirs are made by extracting plant material in a maceration process with alcohol, glycerin or both, depending on the plant constituents and the medium which extracts them best. We then press the extract from the plant matter, bottle it by hand and send it into the world with our hopes that it will be of great benefit to our customers. We mix all of our compounds from single extracts and can also mix any special compound that a person may request. 

The truly wonderful thing about Avena is that, when you choose to buy from us, you're source is simple to trace. Our plants are seeded, transplanted, grown and harvested within sight and sound of where they are transformed into medicine. You can know your farmer, your medicine maker and your bottler: it all happens right here at Avena Botanicals. There's no mystery about the possibility of contamination in plant material or adverse environmental impacts of your purchase.
