Ayurvedic Treatment of Children

Anne is a mother and practicing medical herbalist in England with over 30
years of clinical experience. This day long class promotes an integrative
approach to treating children, using both western and ayurvedic herbs. Anne
will discuss common children's conditions such as colds, flu, fevers,
respiratory infections, ear infections, skin problems, digestive
disturbances, ADD and ADHD, nightmares and insomnia. This class will be of
great benefit to any healthcare professional working with children,
midwives, mothers, herbalists and individuals interested in caring for
children.

Rocio has worked with traditional shamans and healers in the Amazon region for over 15 years. Her presentation offers insights into understanding how traditional Amazonian shamans and herbalists use herbs and ceremony in their healing work.

Ecuadorian herbalist, ethnobotanist and healer Rocio Alarcon offers a very special healing day for women in Avena’s beautiful gardens. The morning will be spent collecting a variety of herbs and preparing a spiritual bath. She will guide us through this ancient practice which is cleansing and healing to the mind, body and spirit. During the afternoon session Rocio will demonstrate and teach a very important breast massage technique, using special oils we will learn to make. Rocio believes spiritual bathing and regular breast massage are essential health practices for women.

Traditional Herbal Healing in the Basque Country: A slide presentation by Rocio Alarcon
Rocio has spent the last five years working in the Spanish Basque Country as an ethnobotanist, collecting a tremendous amount of traditional herbal knowledge from the local people. Her research was part of her doctorate work through the University of London. Many of the Mediterranean herbs she will discuss are familiar to herb gardeners. This is a unique window into a highly trained ethnobotanist’s work in a not well-traveled and beautiful part of Europe.

Rocio will teach a traditional healing and cleansing ceremony known as La Limpia using plants that we will collect from the garden. This ceremony is open to women and men and will be followed by a simple organic breakfast.

Herbalist's Path: Embracing the Earth's Wise Ways
Led by Herbalists Deb Soule and Maia Toll
This course
reflects our deep belief that it is time for every community to have someone
within it who keeps the earth's medicine, who holds space for it in their own
lives, and creates space for these teachings in the lives of those around
them. Herbalist, shaman, medicine keeper.... the name doesn't
matter. Let us come together to reconnect with the deep pulse of the
Earth's heart so we can serve our plant and people communities joyfully,

For those who
wish, this weekend can be a stand alone course. For those who want to go
deeper, we will continue for a year and a day, by web-group and phone
conferences, and culminate with another weekend together. Click

Location: We will
be gathering at Avena's beautiful gardens in Maine. For those of you who
have not been, this is a truly magical and healing place and the opportunity to
spend a weekend there is a gift. As a bonus, Avena is 15 minutes from the
ocean and we will be sure to take a trip there.
Dates: Thursday August 4-August 7. Plan to arrive Thursday afternoon to enjoy
the gardens. We'll have dinner together and evening activities. We
will end with lunch on Sunday (around 1 pm).
Cost: $495, includes 9 organic meals.
Lodging:
There are a limited number of tenting sites available. Please RSVP
quickly if you want to camp. A lovely outdoor shower (with hot water) is
attached to Avena's octagon-shaped classroom and a small, newly created pond
for swimming is adjacent to the gardens. There are also a number of lovely Inns

Autumn is the
season we dig and dry roots, prepare herbal decoctions and tinctures,
strengthen our lungs with aromatic herbs, and offer prayers of gratitude for
the year’s harvests. Throughout the year, and especially during seasonal
transitions, medicinal roots, meditation, and breathing practices support our
health, happiness and inner peace. During our time together we will dig a few
medicinal roots, make a root tincture, drink root teas, enjoy a contemplative
walking meditation in the garden, steam our lungs with aromatic herbs, engage
in a few simple pranayama (breathing) practices, and learn some of the warming
Ayurvedic spices which support the digestive and immune system. Come relax in

Spring Roots and Leaves
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
Learn to identify, harvest, make and use medicine from burdock root, dandelion leaf and root, nettle leaf, yellow dock root, chickweed, violet leaf and lovage. This is a hands-on class. Come prepared for digging, nibbling, chopping, eating and delighting in the beauty of spring. Returning To The Sacred Garden
Taught by Permaculturist Julia Yelton and Herbalist Deb Soule
Join two extraordinary gardeners who weave the principles of permaculture and biodynamics as they teach about how to read and rebuild garden soil using compost teas and biodynamic compost and soil preparations, building compost piles, designing water and flow forms into the landscape, cultivating various perennial fruits and medicinals such as elderberries, hardy kiwi, schisandra berry, solomon seal root, lady's mantle and black cohosh and communicating with the spirit of the plants through meditation and quiet contemplation. Creating A Flower and Herb Garden for Hummingbirds, Bees and Butterflies
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
In honor of National Pollinator Awareness Week, Deb will teach about the various medicinal herbs and flowers growing in Avena's gardens that attract and feed pollinators. Information about garden design, placement of plants, medicinal plant uses, and ruby-throated hummingbirds will be included, along with stories of Deb's experiences working alongside a biologist in
Costa Rica studying ruby-throated hummingbirds.
Summers' Flowers, Flower Essences, and Fragrances
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
This special day includes a quiet flower attunement and meditation, learning how to grow, harvest, and prepare several medicinal flowers, making and using flower essences, flower teas, flower baths, facial steams and an herbal face creme. Participants will take home a flower essence and jar of face creme. Space is limited so please register early. Bring your own bag lunch. Fresh herb tea provided.
Cultivating Joy & Inner Peace: The Ayurvedic Path
Taught by British Herbalist and Ayurvedic Practitioner Anne McIntyre.
Anne is a clinical herbalist with over 28 years experience and uses both Ayurvedic and western herbs in her practice. This class will cover a range of western and Ayurvedic foods and herbs which calm the mind, enhance mental clarity and focus, ease stress, support a meditative practice, and cultivate joy, peace and inner harmony. Suited for individuals and health care providers. If you are new to Ayurveda, we suggest you read The Yoga of Herbs by Dr. Vasant Lad before attending this class. Bring your own bag lunch. Fall Fruits and Roots
Taught by Herbalist Deb Soule
Learn the medicinal properties and how to grow, harvest, prepare and use elderberries, hawthorn berries, rose hips, astragalus root, codonopsis root, teasel root, elecampane root, and solomon's seal root. How to make medicinal soups from reishi, shitake and maitake mushrooms will be addressed along with herbal and nutritional guidelines for keeping the immune system healthy and vital as we go into fall and winter. Bring your own bag lunch and fresh herb tea will be provided. Space is limited so please register early.
