Schisandra Tincture

A vibrant tonic for building emotional and spiritual resilience. Schisandra holds the heart steady so one's inner light can truly shine.*

Botanical Name: Schisandra chinensis.

Part Used: Fresh berry.

About Schisandra Tincture: For over 20 years, we have been cultivating Biodynamic® Schisandra berries on Avena's farm. We hand-harvest Schisandra's red berries in early fall and immediately tincture them in organic alcohol. The result is a rosy, flavorful, and vibrant tincture of the highest quality on the market. Schisandra has long been revered in China, where it is called, Wu Wei Zi, meaning "five flavors fruit". Although all flavors are present, most people find Schisandra to be tart, aromatic, and slightly bitter. This range of flavor is part of what makes Schisandra berries such a potent vitality and well-being tonic.

Schisandra can support focus and energy throughout the day. The ripe berries support healthy function of the liver and kidneys while strengthening the cardiovascular, nervous, and respiratory systems. Schisandra supports a healthy immune system, stress response, and sleep cycle. The astringent quality can be supportive for hot flashes associated with aging, and the grounding and centering qualities of this plant bring ease and calm to the body and spirit. Schisandra holds the heart steady so one's inner light can truly shine.

Garden Notes: Schisandra is a perennial woody vine that ardently climbs the cedar arbor in Avena's central Biodynamic garden and outlying arbors. The small, lightly fragrant white flowers grow in clusters, attracting thousands of small bees in early June. By early fall, the dazzling red berries are tart, juicy, and ready to harvest and tincture, fresh off the vine.

Taste / Energetics: tart, aromatic, tonic, warming, astringent.

When to reach for it: Daily in one's water bottle for support with focus, calm, and overall energy and balance. While preparing for an event, presentation, or project. During increased times of demand or challenge. During recovery from loss and grief. Any time extra support is needed for the lungs, liver, and cardiovascular system and throughout the menopause transition, and beyond. As part of a generalized wellness routine. During travel. To support digestive function. Before a dance party or to quench one's thirst.
