Avena
Botanicals' Organic Herb Gardens and Apothecary
The purpose of this one-acre
garden is to offer both students and members of the community a beautiful,
quiet and restful environment in which to become more familiar with medicinal
herbs. In response to our society's increasing awareness of the healing
value of plants, these organic gardens provide an opportunity for visitors
to learn to recognize and appreciate the individual characteristics of
herbs. Wandering paths, benches, stone walls, and arbors encourage our
visitors to learn through quiet contemplation. The garden is planted with
over a hundred and twenty different species of medicinal herbs, and some
interesting shrubs and trees, all of which are labled with their common
and latin names. The garden is unique for besides being a teaching garden
many of the herbs are harvested
and made into various preparations for Avena Botanicals and seeds collected
for planting the following year. We believe that to plant and tend a garden
is a way to understand the nurturing spirit of nature and that saving
seed is the gardener's way of protecting the world's fragile plant gene
pool and assuring the continuation of various plants.
Avena Botanicals' organic
herb garden is open to the public May through October, Monday - Thursday,
9 am-5 pm.
The herbal apothecary is open year round Monday through Thursday from
9 am - 5 pm, and our staff will be available to answer questions.
