About Ashwagandha: Truly a blessing that Ashwagandha, renowned in the ancient Ayurvedic tradition from India, has made its way west. Ayurvedic practitioners often say if you use Ashwagandha consistently for a year, you will have the strength of a horse for the next ten years. In our gardens in Maine, we grow Ashwagandha as an annual. One of its common names, Winter Cherry, becomes obvious in mid-October as the seeds are surrounded by a bright red skin. It is in the fall of the year, when the leaves of the trees in Maine are aglow with reds and oranges, that we dig the roots of Ashwagandha and save the seeds for the following year's planting. This sweet, bitter and warming root, when taken over several months, relaxes and nourishes the nervous system, calms the mind and supports a restful sleep, lessens occasional anxiety related to hormonal shifts, and supports overall vitality. A deeply rejuvenating herb for post-partum support, and to use throughout our menstruating and menopausal years and beyond.
Traditionally in India Ashwagandha powder is mixed in warm milk. Coconut milk is my favorite milk to stir Ashwagandha into and drink before bed. Ashwagandha powder is paired well with Shatavari powder for deeply nourishing and building overall vitality and strength.
