Hop to Bed

Hop to Bed brings a special group of herbs together to support rest and relaxation, especially during times of occasional sleeplessness.*

About Hop to Bed: Herbalist Deb Soule created this blend over 35 years ago. Hop to Bed has remained a favorite for many, many people over all these years.

Each day, the sun and moon take their turn in the sky, reminding us of the cyclical nature of life. While everyone has somewhat different needs regarding when and how they sleep, consistent and restful sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. Healthy sleep cycles are the best opportunity our bodies have to restore and regenerate for the next day, and the benefits of ample rest support the mind and emotions as much as the physical body.

Hop to Bed encourages calm and relaxation so that one may fall asleep easily and sleep peacefully. This blend is a fantastic addition to an existing nighttime sleep routine or a good ally for starting a regular, consistent nighttime routine. Consider use when traveling or when your daily rhythm and sleep patterns are out of balance. Because these herbs are so supportive to the nervous system, this blend is also a good choice during high-tension moments or when seeking repose.

Taste / Energetics: bitter, earthly, aromatic, relaxing, soothing, grounding.

When to reach for it: When your head hits the pillow at the same time as your "to-do" list. When traveling and to ease jetlag. When that full moon keeps you up at night. Any time you feel that your sleep cycle has been thrown off by emotional and mental worry, stress, and tension. To accompany a relaxing foot bath before bed to help calm the mind and physical body.

Ingredients: Fresh Hops (Humulus lupulus) strobiles†, Fresh Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) leaf†, Fresh Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) root†, Fresh Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) flowering tops†, Spring Water, Grain Alcohol^.

Plant Profiles:

  • Hops (Humulus lupulus) - We have created a few arbors at Avena that are covered with Hops vines. Some of us can gather the Hops strobiles/flowers while standing on the ground and others of us climb ladders to reach the top of the arbors. We place these strobiles directly into glass gallon jars as we gather them, so as not to lose any of the valuable bitter yellow pollen. The papery, greenish-yellow strobiles have bitter and aromatic qualities, helping to support the digestive system and encourage a balanced nervous system, especially during tense and agitated moments in life. They are an ally for healthy sleep and a balanced body and mind.
  • Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) - Calming and diffusive, Lemon Balm is a brightly aromatic and vitalizing herb, a favorite of ours to gather in Avena's Biodynamic® garden and to drink fresh in tea throughout the summer months. Lemon Balm is a mint family plant that helps encourage a peaceful mind, balanced digestion, an uplifted spirit, and restful sleep. Delicious and gentle, Lemon Balm grows easily and abundantly in sunny spaces and attracts many pollinators.
  • Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) - The root of this tall and fragrant plant is known for its calm, mellow energetic quality and for supporting the nervous system. Earthy and aromatic, fresh Valerian root supports healthy sleep and is helpful in maintaining balance in tense, agitated moments.
  • Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) - We continue to expand our Skullcap garden beds at Avena as more people come to value Skullcap's many healing gifts. This non-aromatic, mildly bitter-tasting mint family plant offers a sense of grounding during times of occasional stress, supporting a balanced mind and body. A common and well-loved plant with a deep affinity for the nervous system, Skullcap cools, is energetically protective, and encourages feelings of harmony and peace.
