Botanical Name: Cimicifuga (Acteae) racemosa.

Part Used: Fresh root.

About Black Cohosh Tincture: This unique and beautiful woodland plant, native to the eastern woodlands of what is today known as North America, grows abundantly in our Biodynamic® gardens. Long-used by Indigenous women, it is important that this plant be protected, cultivated, and given to Indigenous-led apothecaries and medicine trails.** Black Cohosh root supports women and other individuals during times of hormonal transition such as postpartum, and helps with resilience when experiencing occasional sleeplessness, mood swings, tension, stress, discomfort, and hot flashes during menopause. Brings a cooling and drying quality to the perimenopausal and menopausal transition. Supports healthy nerves, joints, and muscles, including smooth muscles like the uterus. Consider Black Cohosh to ease occasional discomfort around menses, alone or with other herbs such as Valerian Tincture and/or Menstrual Support. A balancing and refreshing herb with a relaxing effect on the body and mind.

**Avena donates a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of Black Cohosh Tincture to the Bomazeen Land Trust.

Garden Notes: Thousands of native bees love exploring the tall, white, flowering spires of the Black Cohosh plants growing abundantly in our garden. This special woodland plant, native to the whole Appalachian Region, awakens a curiosity and respect in gardeners. Every fall, once the seeds are collected for sowing and sharing, we dig the roots from our Biodynamic gardens and tincture them fresh. This is a plant herbalist Deb Soule has been tending for over 20 years; she continues to learn about propagating its seeds so she can pass on more plants to an Indigenous-led apothecary in Maine.

Taste / Energetics: cooling, slightly sweet, slightly bitter, slightly aromatic, balancing, grounding, refreshing.

When to reach for it: Postpartum. During perimenopause and menopause to support mood, temperature, and general stress. During menses. To support the musculoskeletal system.
